Former Ivory Coast midfielder, Yaya Toure, has admitted that ex-Super Eagles captain, John Mikel Obi, should have won the 2013 CAF African Player of the Year.
Toure stated this while appearing as a guest of Mikel Obi’s podcast.
The Ivorian took home the prestigious honour that year, but feels Mikel was unfairly overlooked.
Mikel Obi has long claimed that he was robbed of the 2013 award.
“Did someone inform you prior to your arrival that you were going to win it? Mikel Obi inquired, “Because I was told the same?”
Toure responded. “To be honest, you deserve it, Obi.
“The season was perfect… you played a crucial role,” Toure added, before clarifying that he hadn’t been informed of his win in advance.
Mikel Obi was instrumental in Nigeria’s triumph in the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, and he also had a solid season in the Premier League.
