In the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR), young Nigerians are taking the lead, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
After the nationwide online registration was resumed on Monday, 69,376 Nigerians had completed pre-registration in just seven hours, according to INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee Sam Olumekun.
Olumekun stated, “48,033 of the total registrants are between the ages of 18 and 34, which represents 69.2 percent of early applicants.”
He also mentioned that 35,573 (51.3 percent) of the applicants were female, and 33,803 (48.7 percent) were male.
Olumekun stressed that while the online portal is still available around-the-clock, in-person registration will begin on Monday, August 25 at 811 state and local government offices across the country, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Additionally, he explained that only Nigerian citizens who are not already registered voters and are at least 18 years old may register.
Double registration is illegal, he cautioned.
He went on to say that replacement cards and transfers between states would also be supported.
