Nigerians have received a harsh warning from Senate President Godswill Akpabio not to put their faith in political alliances, stating that they are not feasible under the nation’s democratic system.
At the House of Representatives Open Week in Abuja, Akpabio issued the caution, stating that only political parties, not individuals or coalitions, have the legal authority to run for office.
According to the Senate President, it is both dishonest and unrealistic for someone to be a member of two political parties at the same time.
“Nigerians, don’t fall for lies. It is not possible to have a coalition.
“It is misleading and unconstitutional for someone to support two political parties at the same time,” he stated.
This comes after the African Democratic Congress, or ADC, was approved as the official platform of the opposition coalition for the 2027 elections during a meeting held in Abuja on Wednesday, July 2.
According to the DAILY POST, the coalition named former Osun governor Rauf Aregbesola as secretary and former Senate President David Mark as interim national chairman.The high-profile meeting saw attendance from several former and serving politicians, including Atiku Abubakar, Nasir El-Rufai, Rotimi Amaechi, Dino Melaye, Dele Momodu, Gabriel Suswam, Ireti Kingibe, Emeka Ihedioha, and Sadique Abubakar—alongside former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi.
The Senate President also spoke about what he described as the public’s erroneous expectations of parliamentarians.
He explained that lawmakers’ primary duty is to enact legislation, not to start infrastructure development initiatives.
In the meantime, Tajudeen Abbas, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, reported developments in the current constitutional revision process.
He disclosed that 5% of seats in the House and Senate will go to people with impairments, and 10% of seats would be set aside for women.
