The rumored decision of former President Goodluck Jonathan to enter the 2027 presidential race has prompted a response from the presidency. Jonathan would run for the presidency in 2027 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), according to Prof. Jerry Gana, an elder statesman and PDP chieftain.
President Bola Tinubu’s spokesperson, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, responded by saying that the court would now have to determine whether Jonathan, who was sworn in twice as president, met the constitutional requirements and could run for president again.
According to the Presidency, Jonathan’s record caused the economy to collapse, leaving the nation in a difficult position.
According to the statement, “We are once again faced with a cacophony of voices, most of them full of sound and fury, signifying nothing, as we begin the march towards the 2027 elections prematurely foisted on the nation by the desperation of the opposition ganging up against President Bola Tinubu despite his glaring giant economic strides,” to paraphrase the unique William Shakespeare in one of his classic works, Macbeth.
Professor Jerry Gana’s recent statement is notable for its ridiculousness.
In an attempt to enlist former President Goodluck Jonathan in the 2007 presidential election, the former Minister of Information and National Orientation confirmed that the former leader would run on the platform of the discredited People’s Democratic Party, or PDP, which left behind a legacy of economic ruin following 16 years of poor leadership.
Gana even fooled himself by believing that the former president would defeat Tinubu and return to power after a 12-year absence.
Since Jonathan’s entry into the race would give the Niger State-born former university don another job, Prof. Gana of the now-defunct MAMSER fame is free to indulge in his usual humor and delude himself.
We should warn former President Jonathan, though, to be cautious of the PDP’s sugarcoated supporters. The only goal of politicians like Jerry Gana is to entice him into the race in order to further their own political, religious, ethnic, and personal agendas. They will leave Gentleman Jonathan in the dark and abandon him in the middle, just like they did in 2015.
Please understand that President Jonathan retains the option to run if he so chooses. He has the unalienable right to run for president once more. He will be warmly welcomed by President Tinubu if he chooses to run.
