There are compelling signs that the federal government, via the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDRA), might be contemplating the closure of filling stations situated along access roads to neighboring countries in order to stop the smuggling of petroleum products.
It would be remembered that in 2019, the federal government closed down more than 400 filling stations situated within 20 kilometers of the nation’s borders due to the same issue.
Adewale Adeniyi, the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service, provided this information over the weekend. He disclosed that the Service has begun profiling petrol stations on access roads to communities bordering neighboring countries in order to combat the smuggling of petroleum products.
