The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps’ Kano State Command has offered an explanation for the recent attack on its Semegu office in the Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State.
Ibrahim Abdullahi, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, provided a copy of the statement outlining this to reporters today.
According to the statement, two criminals with knives tried to steal a phone in Gwazaye, Kumbotso Local Government Area, on Monday, June 2, 2025, at around 8:00 p.m. A local resident was on the phone when one of the attackers approached him and tried to take his phone. One of the thugs came up to him, grabbing the phone with a knife while grappling the occupant.
Witnesses said that a local vigilante group member stepped in. The victim overpowered the thug as he attempted to take the phone, and the now-deceased attacker was stabbed in the neck in the process.
“The victim immediately reported the incident to the Civil Defence Outpost at Semegu, Kumbotso Local Government, along with three neighbours.”
“Unfortunately, criminal elements with dangerous weapons regrouped and attacked our office, thinking that the individuals involved were our employees.”
The statement also made it clear that the altercation did not include any Corps personnel.
“Just to be clear, none of the civil defense staff took part in the incident. Those who came to our office to report the phone heist were obviously brutally attacked alongside our employees,” Abdullahi stated.
He also denied rumors that NSCDC staff had slain a suspected criminal that were going around in some circles.
No suspected thug in the region was murdered or maimed by the NSCDC. The case is presently being discreetly investigated by the Police Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Kano for the sake of transparency and fairness, and additional action is still pending,” he continued.
