The Osun State police command announced on Thursday that it has opened an investigation into the attack on Asimiyu Ajibola, the chairman of the Osogbo Local Government Area Accord, which left him fighting for his life at the Osun State University Teaching Hospital in Osogbo.
According to a statement signed by the command’s spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, the incident happened on Wednesday at approximately 9:50 p.m. in the MDS Area of Osogbo. The victim was allegedly attacked by two armed persons on a motorcycle in what appeared to be a murderous attempt.
According to Ojelabi, the leadership sent tactical and conventional teams to the location right away after getting the distress report.
“The victim was quickly taken to a hospital by a group of police officers, where he is presently undergoing treatment.”
Hon. Ajibola’s condition is stable and he is responding well to therapy, according to medical professionals.
In an attempt to capture and prosecute the escaping suspects, additional operative teams simultaneously initiated a vigorous pursuit of them.
He added, “A preliminary investigation at the scene led to the recovery of exhibits which are currently being subjected to forensic analysis.”
Ojelabi denounced the incident and stated that Ibrahim Gotan, the Commissioner of Police, had mandated a thorough inquiry.
“He (CP) has instructed all pertinent investigative units to use every resource at their disposal in order to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack, identify the perpetrators, and guarantee timely arrest and prosecution.”The command wants to reassure the public that the continuing inquiry will look everywhere.
The statement said, “Citizens are urged to remain calm, law-abiding, and provide credible information that may assist the police in tracking down the perpetrators.”
Ajibola is currently on the danger list at the UNIOSUN Teaching Hospital in Osogbo, according to a statement released by the Osun State Government in response to the tragedy and signed by Kolapo Alimi, Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment.
According to Alimi, one of the other passengers in the car carrying Ajibola at the time of the incident described how, at approximately 9:50 p.m., they were traveling from the MDS Area when a group of armed men suddenly pursued them and opened fire on everyone inside.
Before the attackers withdrew and fled, he continued, the victims were able to flee to the nearby Dugbe Divisional Police Headquarters for safety.
In order to identify the masterminds of the heinous act, the commissioner asked the police to do everything in their power.
It is a regrettable situation that has to be looked into.
“Those responsible must be held accountable. Therefore, we are urging the police to conduct their investigation in a professional manner, without fear or favor, in order to identify the masterminds of the incident, which appears to have political overtones based on all available indicators,” Alimi stated.
