As the growing Israel-Iran confrontation exacerbates regional instability, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth declared Monday that the United States is sending more defensive capabilities to the Middle East.
In a statement shared on the social media site X, Hegseth said the action is meant to better safeguard American personnel against growing security risks.
“Our primary goal is to protect U.S. forces, and these deployments are meant to strengthen our defensive posture in the area,” Hegseth said.
The Pentagon is sending a large number of aerial refueling tankers and has ordered the movement of a U.S. aircraft carrier to the area, according to earlier reports, though he did not reveal the precise military forces engaged.
The deployment coincides with growing concerns about the larger ramifications of the current dispute between Iran and Israel, which has already claimed hundreds of lives and increased the likelihood of a wider war in the Middle East.
