About 600 young people took to the streets of Umuahia on Tuesday to celebrate the ruling in favor of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, or IPOB, by a Kenyan court.
The kidnapping and 2021 rendition of Nnamdi Kanu from Kenya to Nigeria was declared illegal, unconstitutional, and a flagrant breach of his fundamental rights by a Kenyan court this week.
In addition, the court granted the Kenyan government 10 million Kenyan Shillings in damages.
Following an early-morning meeting on Tuesday at Awka Hall in Umuahia, the All Igbo Youth Forum called on the Federal Government to immediately free Nnamdi Kanu.
Members of the All Igbo Youth Forum, who marched through a few streets in the capital of Abia State in celebration, claimed that the ruling rendered in distant Kenya had further supported the Federal government’s decision to liberate Kanu.
The young people declared that there was no more justification for keeping Kanu in custody while dancing and singing happy songs.
The President General of All Igbo Youth Forum, Chinedu Obilolor appealed to President Bola Tinubu to free Kanu, the same way Yoruba youth leader, Sunday Igboho, was freed by the Federal Government.
He alleged that politicians from the South-East have refused to identify with Nnamdi Kanu each time his case came up in court, while using his name to score cheap political points.
Obilolor, the president general of the All Igbo Youth Forum, told Tinubu that he would lose the zone in the 2027 election if he did not discuss issues pertaining to the interests of the region with the youths in the South-East directly rather than through governors and lawmakers.
He claims that following their conference in Ebonyi State last week, where a resolution was made to work for the general benefit of the Igbos, young people from all over the South-East area adopted a united stance.The fact that our brother is still there today does not sit well with the youths of Igbo land.
We, the young people, are now begging Mr. President to let us have this young man back,” Chinedu Obilolor stated.
