At an official handover of the intercepted currencies and the arrested individuals to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Comptroller of the Nigerian Customs Service’s Kano/Jigawa Area Command, Comptroller Dalhatu Abubakar, announced that the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) Kano/Jigawa Area Command had arrested an individual named Ahmed Salisu, who was in possession of a Ghanaian passport, and confiscated over N650 million in undeclared foreign currency at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA) in Kano. The EFCC and the service had previously held a stakeholders sensitization workshop in April of this year to help stakeholders understand the importance of travelers declaring any excess currency they are carrying.
He added that three people have so far arrested in connection with the intercepted currencies and the service will hand them all over to the EFCC for upward investigations.
While receiving the intercepted currencies, the EFCC Kano Zonal Coordinator, Ibrahim Shazali said the development is a clear indication of the existing working synergy between the two organizations
He stated that anyone found lacking will be brought before the court for prosecution and that the commission, working with the NCS, will continue to look into the situation.
As you can see, the suspects are being held at this time. The Money Laundering Prohibition Act 2022 and pertinent sections of the Nigerian Customs Service Act 2023, which tightly regulate the flow of currency across Nigerian borders, clearly govern this arrest and seizure.
