Due to suspected financial malfeasance, the governor of Bauchi fires the university bursar.

Ayuba Mohammed Gital, the Acting Bursar of Sa’adu Zungur State University (SAZU), was fired by Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State for alleged financial mismanagement and a lack of responsibility.

The declaration was made by the governor in Bauchi on Tuesday as he was receiving the report of a visitation team that was entrusted with looking into the financial and administrative practices of the institution. He voiced serious concerns about what he called inadequate financial management since the university’s founding in 2012.

The governor also disclosed his decision to form an audit committee to look at the university’s management of student fees and other internally produced income.

The visitation panel’s chairperson, Prof. Gambo Laraba Abdullahi, explained that the visitations took place at all of SAZU’s campuses and that the evidence gleaned from the visitations was based on 47 memoranda the panel received, including grievances from the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) about inadequate funding and management.

She said that N400 million had just been added to the university’s budget and recommended that the government take a closer look at the university’s multi-campus status.
