Sule Lamido, the former governor of Jigawa State, has disputed reports that he defected to the African Democratic Congress, or ADC, describing the party as a “smaller skin” that is out of step with his political legacy.
Sule Lamido reiterated his dedication to the Peoples Democratic Party, or PDP, in an interview with reporters in Kano on Tuesday, despite the party’s internal problems.
Ahead of the general elections in 2027, he also stated his readiness to back any political coalition that seeks to protect Nigeria’s future, whether it be inside or outside the PDP.
“I have faith in Nigeria. Therefore, I am willing to cooperate with any arrangements that will protect and save Nigeria in 2027, whether they are made inside or outside the Peoples Democratic Party,” he stated.
The former Foreign Affairs Minister addressed the rumors that he was associated with the ADC and categorically denied them, stating that the PDP continues to be the foundation of his political identity.
“Despite the PDP’s issues, I still support it because I can’t let go of my past. I can’t just crawl in flesh and blood, leave my skin, and be given a smaller skin called ADC. “I can’t,” he said.
He highlighted the significant role the PDP has played in shaping his political career, having entrusted him with key positions like Minister of Foreign Affairs and Governor of Jigawa State.
“So, I cannot simply renounce my history, my legacy and my heritage and say, ‘Today I got something new’. I am out of PDP. I will not do that,” Lamido added.
Regarding Nigeria’s continuous drive to establish more states, Lamido pointed out that although the demand may be justified, it doesn’t really address the nation’s most urgent issues.
Will the rift between the North and the South, poverty, hunger, and insecurity be resolved by the establishment of new states? “The creation of new states is not the most urgent issue,” he stated.
Regarding Senator Rabi’u Kwankwaso’s recent visit to President Bola Tinubu, Lamido added that the former Kano governor had every right to do so.
