Following warnings of heavy rainfall and potential disasters in the Northwest, authorities in the states of Sokoto, Kebbi, and Zamfara have intensified preparations to address flooding.
To improve disaster response, the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) in Sokoto announced that it is collaborating with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), security agencies, Red Cross, and others. Food and construction materials have been piled up as relief supplies.
Floods have already impacted at least 1,400 households in the Kware Local Government Area, according to Mustapha Umar, SEMA’s director of relief and rehabilitation.
Waterways in Zamfara are being cleared to lower the risk of flooding, according to Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs Musa Kainuwa. He asked riverine communities to relocate to safer areas and cautioned locals against disposing of trash in drainage systems.
Recalling that more than 4,000 homes were destroyed in the floods in Gummi and Talata Mafara LGAs last year, the Zamfara Emergency Management Agency, or ZEMA, stated that awareness-raising efforts are still going on in high-risk communities.
Muhammad Hamidu-Jarkuka, the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs in Kebbi, stated that financial resources have been allocated to aid victims and that proactive measures, such as community education and logistical support, have been implemented.
