The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has warned that calls for former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential election are a deliberate attempt to throw the country into crisis.
Speaking on Channels Television’s *Politics Today* on Thursday night, Wike described such campaigns as hypocritical, pointing out that many of those making the calls were the same people who frustrated Jonathan’s re-election bid in 2015.
“Anybody saying Jonathan should return because he will only do one term is only looking for a crisis. These are the same people who abandoned him in 2015. Why now? Jonathan has earned global respect as an international statesman, and they just want to drag him into unnecessary conflict,” Wike said.
He cautioned against destabilising the political balance by promoting Jonathan or any southern candidate under the guise of a “one-term presidency,” insisting such moves were insincere.
On the state of the nation, Wike acknowledged that Nigerians were experiencing hardship but maintained that President Bola Tinubu’s administration was making bold and necessary decisions to rebuild the economy.
“Yes, there is hardship, I agree. But nobody can deny that this government is working. I see the projects in Abuja every day—they are proof that progress is being made,” he stressed.
Wike also dismissed recent comments by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who warned of a possible revolution due to poverty and hunger. He accused Atiku of hypocrisy, recalling that he had eight years as vice president without laying a proper foundation to address hunger.
“For me, I don’t even bother reading what he says because there is no truth in it,” Wike remarked.
The minister urged Nigerians to remain patient with the Tinubu administration and warned opposition leaders against exploiting the country’s economic challenges for political advantage.
