The state’s Shura Council has been tasked by the Kano State Government with reviewing and providing advice on petitions and counterpetitions against Sheikh Lawan Triumph.
The cleric was accused of making blasphemous remarks against Prophet Muhammad during a recent preaching session in Kano by a number of Islamic organizations, including Safiyatul Islam of Nigeria, Tijjaniya Youth Enlightenment Forum, Interfaith Parties for Peace and Development, Qadiriyya Juma’at Mosque Imams, Committee of Sunnah Preachers, and Multaqa Ahbab Alsufiyya.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf ordered that the issue be sent to the Shura Council for review, according to a statement released on Friday by Musa Tanko, press secretary to the secretary to the state government.
Umar Farouk Ibrahim, the secretary to the state government, made a plea for composure and asked citizens to carry on with their regular lives in peace.
The necessity of preserving religious harmony was emphasized by some petitioners. Safiyatul Islam of Nigeria stated that freedom of speech must be used “within the bounds of respect for faith and values,” while a representative for the Committee of Sunnah Preachers stated that their goal was to “protect the sanctity of the Prophet’s name.”
It is anticipated that the government will receive resolution advice from the Shura Council, a reputable organization recognized for religious mediation.
