751 LGAs in Nigeria are falling behind in fiscal transparency and accountability, and they are at high risk of corruption, according to a report called “the Nigerian Local Government Integrity Index (NLGII),” which evaluated governance and corruption risk across the country’s 774 LGAs.
The Center for Fiscal Transparency and Public Integrity’s first study highlights the level of accountability at the local level and offers an evidence-based evaluation of governance and corruption concerns in each of the 774 LGAs.
It also demonstrates the absence of integrity at the local level, provides a framework for change, citizen engagement, and institutional rejuvenation.The findings demonstrate that 85% of LGAs fall inside the “Very High” or “Critical” risk categories, typified by opacity, inadequate enforcement, and poor service delivery outcomesThe report also urged the federal and state governments to uphold constitutional provisions that require individuals to demand that their leaders act honorably, civil society and the media to demand accountability, and LGAs to aggressively embrace openness.
In order to prevent corruption and inefficiency, it also emphasizes the necessity of strong oversight, capacity building, and the integration of digital tools.
