A non-profit organization, Yiaga Africa, has said that the newly appointed chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Joash Amupitan, SAN, faces major tasks ahead with some governorship elections fast approaching.
The Executive Director of Yiaga Africa, Samson Itodo, made this known on Thursday during an interview on Arise Television.
He noted that there is very limited time, stressing the need for the transition process to be concluded quickly.
His remarks came less than 24 hours after the nomination of Professor Amupitan as INEC chairman.
“It’s clear from his background that he has the professional qualifications required, and I can say this as someone who was once his student at the university.
“Yes, he has the credentials and experience, but INEC as an institution demands more. It requires people with the courage to withstand political pressure.
“If he is confirmed by the Senate, the team he works with will be very important, given the large number of INEC staff, from Electoral Officers to Resident Commissioners.
“I believe he has a big task ahead with the FCT election and some upcoming governorship elections,” Itodo stated.
