Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has cautioned the state’s youths against attacking, disrespecting, or making unfounded public allegations against the family of Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
The Governor issued the warning following a peaceful protest at the Government House, Uyo, by the Akwa Ibom Youth Coalition over issues raised by a female member of the Greater Akpabio family.
In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Ekerete Udoh, Governor Eno acknowledged the citizens’ right to express opinions but stressed that family disputes should remain private and not be escalated into public controversies that could tarnish the image of respected leaders.
“We appeal to our younger generation not to destroy the leaders God has raised for us at all levels by besmirching their character or making unfounded allegations against them,” Eno said, emphasizing the importance of civility, unity, and respect for leaders regardless of political affiliation. He maintained that the Office of the Senate President brings immense pride to Akwa Ibom and should be accorded the highest respect.
The Governor’s intervention comes after Akpabio’s sister-in-law, Mrs. Patience Akpabio, made a murder allegation against the Senate President. In response, the Afe Nkuku Annang (the apex body of traditional rulers in Annang land) has summoned Mrs. Patience Akpabio and her husband, Ibanga Akpabio, to appear before them within seven days over the alleged “malicious and unguarded” social media posts. The monarchs warned that failure to appear for “clarification and possible cleansing” will result in “drastic punitive sanctions” in line with Annang tradition.
