Sheikh Habeebullah Al-Ilory, a well-known Islamic theologian, has cautioned Muslims against using satellite dishes, calling it a sin that could cost users their spot in paradise.
Sheikh Ilory claimed that mounting a satellite dish on a home’s roof is not only against Islam but also spiritually harmful during a recent religious sermon.
The scholar stated, “Anyone who uses a satellite dish and hangs it on his house’s roof and dies will not enter paradise because he/she committed haram.”
His remarks have garnered a lot of attention and sparked conversations on how contemporary technology affects religious life and spiritual responsibility.
Sheikh Ilory focused on a number of contentious topics, including as women’s political engagement and social reform in orthodox Islamic nations, while highlighting the spiritual ramifications of using satellite dishes.
He cited the development of Saudi Arabia’s policies as proof of changing attitudes in the Muslim world.
“If a woman drives a car or participates in politics, it’s haram. But women are not fighting for the right to drive cars in Saudi Arabia, and it’s no longer haram,” he said.
Sheikh Ilory recalled being criticized in 2010 for supporting women’s involvement in politics.
“When I said it earlier in 2010 that women can be involved in politics, people criticised me. Not long after my statements in 2010, Saudi Arabia allowed women to vote and participate in politics,” he added.
He further noted that Saudi Arabia now trains women in the military and permits them to wear trousers.
According to him, these are signs of progressive reform in the Islamic world.
Criticizing a fellow cleric who condemned these developments, Sheikh Ilory stated, “One Alfa who criticised this evolvement was quoting a part of the scripture I believe he has no understanding of.”
