Osun Police carry out explosive awareness campaign for scrap dealers

Osun State Police Command has urged the public, particularly those in the scrap and waste business, to remain vigilant and cooperate with the Police to prevent incidents involving explosives.

The Commander of Explosive Ordinance Disposal, Base 16 Osogbo, SP Godwin Ogigha, gave this advice during an awareness and sensitisation campaign for members of the National Association of Scrap and Waste Dealers Employees of Nigeria (NASWDEN), Osun State Chapter.

According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, the campaign, organized by the Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) and Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) unit, aimed to educate the public on identifying, handling, and understanding the risks associated with explosive materials.

SP Ogigha emphasized that under the leadership of CP Ibrahim Gotan, the Police Command remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all residents in Osun State.

“The Command will continue to work towards a safe environment for all. We urge members of the public, especially those in the scrap and waste business, to stay alert and report any suspicious objects or activities immediately,” SP Ogigha said.

He praised participants for their cooperation and attentiveness during the training, encouraging them to apply the knowledge gained to promote workplace safety.

The event included practical demonstrations and interactive discussions on how to recognize potential explosive devices and respond safely to prevent casualties.

Representatives of NASWDEN thanked the Police Command for the initiative and pledged to collaborate with security agencies to maintain public safety.

“We will work closely with the Police and other stakeholders to ensure our members follow safety procedures and report any suspicious findings without delay,” they stated.

Participants were also educated on the dangers of mishandling suspicious objects and the importance of strictly adhering to safety protocols in their daily work.

The campaign highlighted the need for cooperation between law enforcement and the scrap and waste industry to prevent explosive-related incidents and forms part of Osun Police Command’s broader strategy to strengthen community engagement and safety awareness.

DSP Ojelabi reaffirmed that the command will continue partnering with relevant organizations and communities to promote public safety across the state.
