INEC: ADC says it will give Amupitan the benefit of the doubt

The African Democratic Congress, ADC, has said it will give the newly appointed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, the benefit of the doubt in steering the affairs of the commission.

This was stated in a release by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, shortly after Amupitan’s nomination was announced on Thursday.

The party expressed hope that the law professor would work to restore Nigerians’ and the international community’s confidence in the country’s electoral system.

“We are cautious but optimistic. We expect the new INEC Chairman to aspire to perform better and rebuild trust in Nigeria’s elections. His loyalty must be to the Nigerian people, not the government.

“We are ready to give him the benefit of the doubt based on his past record. However, he now has the chance to build a legacy his children will be proud of or tarnish his reputation with failure.

“He should also remember that his tenure will extend beyond one election cycle and must therefore look beyond the interests of those who appointed him,” the statement read.

BASEMEDIA recalls that the National Council of State on Thursday confirmed Professor Amupitan’s nomination as the new INEC Chairman.
