The Kano State Hisbah Board has detained a group of young men and five women accused of organizing a marriage without parental consent or adherence to Islamic legal procedures in the Nasarawa area of Kano city.
The central figures in the case are 23-year-old Aminu and 22-year-old Sadiya, who reportedly got married with a bride price of ₦10,000 without informing their parents or obtaining approval from any legal authority. Others arrested include Umar, 24, who acted as the groom’s representative; Abubakar, 23, who stood in as the bride’s guardian; and 21-year-old Usaina along with other young women who served as witnesses.
Confirming the arrest, Dr. Mujaheedden Aminuddeen Abubakar, Deputy Commander-General of Hisbah in charge of special operations, said the board acted after residents alerted them to the unlawful marriage.
He noted that the act contravened both Islamic teachings and state laws on marriage, stressing that Hisbah would continue to clamp down on anyone who disregards proper Islamic and legal marriage procedures.
Those apprehended are currently in Hisbah custody for further investigation and will be handed over to appropriate authorities for possible prosecution.
