Hope Uzodimma, the governor of Imo State, has clarified that the 72-hour ban on tinted commercial buses was brought on by allegations that they were being used for armed robbery and kidnapping.
The governor said the action was taken in response to intelligence reports that connected some of the vehicles to crime syndicates in a statement released on Thursday by his chief press secretary, Oguwuike Nwachukwu.
All commercial bus operators in the state have 72 hours to remove tinted windows or risk legal action, according to the regulation, which was issued Wednesday night.
“After reports of their involvement in criminal activities, Governor Hope Uzodimma has approved the clampdown on all tinted vehicles used for commercial activities in the state,” the statement said. Most notably, crimes including kidnapping, armed robbery, and hit-and-run occurrences have been connected to commercial buses with tinted glasses.
Uzodimma has instructed security services to cooperate with selected government officials in order to enforce the instruction and stop the increasing crime. If defaulters don’t comply within the allotted three days, they will face legal action.
