The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has refuted viral claims that the ongoing Ore-Ondo-Akure highway expansion is being built with substandard materials and does not meet international standards. Umahi, through the Ondo State Controller of Works, Olajide Hussein, assured the public that the construction of the 86.43-kilometer highway strictly follows approved engineering designs, confirming the pavement’s structural integrity is sound. Addressing a video that alleged the use of “wire mesh” instead of “heavy iron rod,” the Minister clarified that the use of A142 wire mesh on the outer shoulders is a standard practice both in Nigeria and globally. He explained that heavy reinforcement is used on the carriageway due to high flexural stresses, while the lighter mesh is appropriate for the outer shoulders, which bear less load. Umahi expressed satisfaction with the contractor’s work, projecting that the completed road will be durable for over 50 years, underscoring the government’s commitment to delivering durable, safe, and cost-effective road infrastructure.
