The Yobe State House of Assembly has urged the executive arm of government to take urgent, proactive measures to control the frequent and deadly road traffic accidents occurring in Ngelzarma, Damagum, and Dogon Kuka towns along the Damaturu – Potiskum highway.
The call followed a motion of urgent public importance presented by Hon. Maina Digma Gana, representing Damagum Constituency.
Hon. Gana stated that the rising number of accidents in these areas is alarming. He revealed that over thirty people have lost their lives in Damagum town alone, in Fune Local Government Area, since January 2025 due to accidents along the highway, primarily caused by high speed and reckless driving.
The lawmaker recommended that the state government should construct a roundabout in Damagum town and install speed-breakers in Ngelzarma and Dogon Kuka towns to curb overspeeding motorists.
Supporting the motion, the Majority Leader, Hon. Nasiru Hassan Yusuf, and the member for Karasuwa, Hon. Adamu Dala Dogo, stressed the need for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Yobe State Road Traffic Management Agency (YOROTA) to intensify efforts in sensitizing motorists against overspeeding and reckless driving.
Presiding over the sitting, the Speaker, Right Hon. Chiroma Buba Mashio, further called on members of the National Assembly representing Yobe State to present the matter to the Federal Government for necessary intervention, given that it is a major highway.
