The Borno Elders Forum has rejected recent claims of genocide in Borno State, labeling them as “malicious” and “misdirected.”
In a statement signed by Secretary and Spokesman Dr. Bulama Mali Gubio, the group expressed deep disappointment over what it views as an attempt to create tension and disunity in the state.
The Forum noted that Borno’s population has been the victim of a brutal Boko Haram insurgency since 2009, which has claimed over half a million lives and displaced more than two million residents. Despite this massive devastation, the elders said they have never viewed the crisis as genocide, emphasizing that the attacks were conducted by “agents of destruction” who targeted people of all faiths.
The group stated that at a time when they are still mourning and need cooperation, it is distressing that “some nations, groups, and individuals are making a mockery of our distress.”
