The Foundation for Environmental Rights Advocacy & Development (FENRAD) has condemned the arrests and continued detention of activist Omoyele Sowore, Emmanuel Kanu (Nnamdi Kanu’s brother), Aloy Ejimakor (Kanu’s lawyer), and other protesters by the police, describing the actions as arbitrary and an affront to democratic principles.
In a statement by its Executive Director, Nelson Nnanna Nwafor, FENRAD demanded their immediate and unconditional release. The organization views the arrests as unlawful, arguing they violate Sections 35, 39, and 40 of the 1999 Constitution and Articles 9, 10, and 11 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
FENRAD also called on the Federal Government to immediately drop all terrorism-related charges against IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu and ensure his unconditional release in the interest of justice and national reconciliation. The group expressed surprise that Kanu remains detained despite previous court rulings and the position of the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (UNWGAD) regarding his detention and extraordinary rendition.
