Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal is under intense political pressure as a wave of defections from his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) threatens his re-election in 2027 and leaves him vulnerable to impeachment.
The mass exodus, driven by accusations of poor performance, neglect of loyalists, and failure to deliver on promises, includes a sitting lawmaker, Hon. Maharazu Salisu, and several PDP ward leaders. The Governor’s political predicament worsened after a PDP candidate he allegedly financed heavily in a recent by-election also defected to the APC.
This continuous loss of members has given the APC control of 13 out of 24 seats in the State House of Assembly, with rumors of seven more defections. If those defections occur, Lawal would be left with only four loyal members, creating a high impeachment risk.
In response, Governor Lawal is reportedly planning urgent, high-level consultations in Abuja to stabilize his party and secure political cover. During a recent late-night meeting with lawmakers, he admitted concerns about his future, reportedly mentioning he may be forced to “explore international options”—referencing properties he owns abroad—if the crisis escalates.
Adding to his woes, the Northern APC Stakeholders Forum has warned the national APC leadership against accepting Lawal into their party, arguing that his alleged failures in security, infrastructure, and welfare would damage the APC’s image in the region.
