President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, hinted there may be a misunderstanding regarding US President Donald Trump’s comments on alleged genocide in Nigeria. Bwala said this misunderstanding would be clarified when Trump and Tinubu meet.
The presidential spokesman, who announced the planned meeting, insisted there is no genocide in Nigeria. Speaking to BBC World Service on Sunday, Bwala assured that Nigeria will partner with the international community to address insecurity.
He stated: “I believe there’s been a misunderstanding of President Donald Trump’s recent remarks. When the leaders eventually meet, I am confident they will have the opportunity to clarify these issues.” He maintained that Nigeria faces serious security challenges affecting all faiths, including Christians, but that “There is no genocide taking place in Nigeria.”
Bwala recalled that during Trump’s first administration, his executive action helped facilitate the sale of arms to Nigeria for the fight against insurgency. He stressed that Nigeria is a “sovereign nation” and while international collaboration is welcome, any intervention must respect Nigerian sovereignty. He concluded that it would be diplomatically inappropriate for the United States to take unilateral action without Nigeria’s engagement and consent.
