According to former Senate President Bukola Saraki, the recent defections of Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, former PDP vice presidential candidate Ifeanyi Okowa, and other political figures have validated his decision to keep quiet. Speaking through his 𝔏 handle, the PDP leader said he decided to keep quiet because he realized that the party’s purported leaders were not sincere. He added that the PDP is unfazed by the recent wave of defections and urged party members and supporters not to play the blame game or target alleged traitors for the party’s declining fortunes.
Therefore, it is in Nigeria’s and our democracy’s best interests for the opposition to be powerful and active enough to overthrow the ruling party at any time, he stated. So, I’m telling our party members that the PDP is just going through a rebirth.
“Those like me who have chosen to keep quiet and observe events unfold have had their position supported by this development. I have observed that the alleged opposition leaders lacked honesty. One had no idea who they would be speaking to next.
The Waziri of Ilorin added that it would be hazardous for any leader to acknowledge that they were coerced into acting in the way the Delta governor and his allies did.
“I want PDP members all across the country to understand that maintaining democracy is not a quick fix,” he stated. It’s more like a marathon. It’s not a series of knockout football games. It’s a league. In politics, a day is a long time, and no one can foresee how the situation will change over the next few weeks or months.
“We ought to remain steadfast and concentrate on bolstering the party. It is not essential at this stage to mourn why they left.
“Our numerous party members should know that the PDP is better with fewer members who are loyal, sincere, determined, dedicated, and committed to its ideas, ideals, and progress than to have so many who will identify with us in the afternoon and be romancing the ruling party in the night.
“We still have about two years before the next election. That is a long time in politics. We have enough time to brace up to the challenge. There is nothing that prevents us from getting some governors from the other parties to join our ranks. My appeal to our young party members is that this defection is just a mere challenge to us to further mobilize and put our house in order. Also, our women’s wing should seize the opportunity to help in the rebuilding mission.”
