The long-awaited synchronization test between the Nigerian power grid, which includes the Niger Republic and portions of Benin and Togo, and the rest of the West African power grid has been successfully completed by the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) in cooperation with the West African Power Pool Information and Coordination Centre (WAPP-ICC). According to a statement from NISO, the test was carried out on Saturday, November 8, 2025, between 05:04 and 09:04. This represents a significant advancement in the ongoing efforts to create a single frequency.It also stated that although a number of synchronization systems had previously been suggested, the only known effort at physical synchronization occurred in 2007 and lasted for roughly seven minutes before being abandoned. “The exercise has now been successfully completed through improved system monitoring, stricter frequency control, harmonized operational standards, and real-time communication among participating control centers, following renewed engagements and enhanced coordination between NISO and the WAPP-ICC.”
