Babachir Lawal, a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), claimed that American Christians are justified in defending Nigerian Christians if they believe the latter are being persecuted.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television that was monitored by DAILY POST on Monday, Lawal contended that such intervention is consistent with Biblical concepts of Christian unity and should not be criticized.
His remarks were a response to accusations made by the United States government regarding assaults on Christians in Nigeria, as well as US President Donald Trump’s warning of potential military action.
He maintained that the Nigerian government is obligated to protect its citizens and ensure their well-being. Lawal suggested that the government’s failure to do so allows affected groups to seek assistance from outside sources.
He stated, “The government ought to assure us that they can provide the peace and well-being we desire. If they cannot achieve that, they cannot fault any segment of society that chooses to seek help from any source.”
Lawal emphasized that protecting fellow believers is fundamental to Christian doctrine, stressing that the idea of “Christian brotherhood” mandates believers to safeguard each other, irrespective of their country or ethnic background.
He further added, “The Bible instructs us to be our brothers’ keepers. If American Christians opt to assist Nigerian Christians because they are suffering, that is Biblical. They have the right to do so if Christians feel they cannot defend themselves.”
