A group called the Coalition of Nigerian Military Veterans has called for the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, to apologize to the naval officer he verbally confronted during a recent enforcement visit to a disputed land site in Abuja.
The veterans’ demand stems from a viral video that showed Minister Wike in a heated disagreement with naval personnel who were allegedly guarding the land, which an officer claimed belonged to a former Chief of Naval Staff. Wike reportedly used abusive language against the officer during the escalating argument, having accused the personnel of supporting an illegal construction.
In a statement delivered by spokesperson Abiodun Durowaiye-Herberts, the Coalition sharply criticized Wike for his verbal insult, specifically questioning how a public official could call an officer “a fool” publicly. The group asserted that a uniformed officer represents the authority of the Nigerian state, and disrespecting them weakens public institutions. The veterans suggested Wike should have addressed the issue privately with the Chief of Naval Staff instead of attempting to disgrace the officer.
Furthermore, the Coalition opposed any suggestion of disciplinary action against the naval officer, warning that they would protest by occupying the FCT Minister’s office and residence if the officer is punished. They insisted that military officers are loyal to the nation, not individual politicians, and concluded that Wike’s use of abusive language was unacceptable and “demeans the dignity” of his office, thus requiring an apology.
