The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has issued a strict order for unauthorized operators—including tanker drivers, limousine operators, bus parks, and informal business owners—to immediately clear out of the Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA) road in Lagos, warning that enforcement will commence shortly.
FAAN’s Managing Director, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, issued the directive during a media briefing for the 2025 FAAN Safety Week, stating that the persistent illegal occupation of the airport corridor presents serious safety and environmental risks and is detrimental to aviation operations. Kuku noted that despite repeated warnings and direct engagements, unauthorized operators continue to obstruct vehicular movement and compromise safety standards. Their activities contribute significantly to pollution and poor sanitation around the airport, which increases the hazard of bird strikes (a major flight safety risk) at both Lagos and Abuja airports by attracting wildlife.
FAAN conducted a detailed environmental assessment and notified all encroachers. Kuku confirmed the agency is working with the Lagos State Government and federal security agencies to ensure “full compliance,” declaring that the clearance is imminent and relocation is “inevitable.” The MD called for enhanced collaboration among all aviation stakeholders—legislators, regulators, airlines, and service providers—to ensure adherence to safety and environmental standards across the industry. As part of the Safety Week activities, Kuku also led a session focused on enhancing operational efficiency and alignment with international best practices in aviation safety.
