APC leader Sani Shinkafi announces his desire to become governor of Zamfara in 2027.

Dr. Sani Abdullahi Shinkafi, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Zamfara State and former National Secretary of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), has announced his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election under the APC platform.
Speaking to supporters in Gusau, Shinkafi stated that the time for imposing candidates in the APC is over and affirmed his right as a qualified party member to seek any elective position.
He argued strongly for a shift in power, lamenting the marginalization of other zones due to the continuous domination of the state’s leadership by the Zamfara West Senatorial Zone since 1999. He pointed out that former governors Ahmed Sani Yarima, Abdulaziz Yari, and Bello Matawalle all hail from Zamfara West, collectively holding the governorship for 20 years, while Zamfara North, his zone, only produced Mahmuda Aliyu Shinkafi for four years, thus deserving a chance in 2027.
However, a different APC chieftain, Aminu Muhammad Kaura, publicly backed the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, as the party’s preferred candidate for the 2027 governorship race, describing him as a unifying figure.
