Nigerian troops from the Joint Task Force (JTF), North East Operation Hadin Kai, successfully rescued 74 National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members from a potential abduction by Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists. This incident happened along the Buratai–Kamuya road in Borno State, according to a post on X by counterinsurgency expert Zagazola Makama on Thursday.
Makama, citing reliable sources, reported that the corps members—36 males and 38 females—were rescued around 9:05 p.m. on Tuesday after their vehicles broke down near an area notorious for kidnappings. A military patrol team was quickly sent to the location after a closed-circuit television (CCTV) system monitored by troops detected suspicious movement involving three buses.
The report stated, “On arrival, troops discovered 74 NYSC members stranded after their vehicles developed mechanical faults.” The troops immediately secured them to prevent a likely abduction attempt by Boko Haram or ISWAP elements known to operate in that area.
The corps members were initially escorted from Maiduguri to Damaturu by troops of the 7 Division Garrison. However, upon reaching Damaturu, they reportedly failed to inform the Sector 2 Headquarters before continuing their journey to Hawul Local Government Area without an armed escort. It was also gathered that the corps members were traveling to Hawul for an evangelical mission when the incident occurred. Makama concluded that the rescued NYSC members are currently being housed at the Buratai military base while arrangements are made for their safe movement.
