Following the SuperEagles’ failure to advance to the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) issued an apology to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Nigerians, particularly those in the football community. The three-time Africa champions’ dreams of making it to the 2026 World Cup were dashed on Sunday, November 16, when they fell 3–4 in penalties to the Democratic Republic of Congo in the CAF World Cup playoff final. With this most recent incident, the Super Eagles have missed out on the world championship three times since 1994: in 2006, 2022, and 2026. Nigerians have voiced their dissatisfaction with the Super Eagles and the football federation in the wake of this most recent football catastrophe; many have called for a complete reform of both the squad and the institution.The loss to DR Congo in Rabat, however, is a sad time for Nigerian football, according to a statement released by the NFF yesterday. “The Nigeria Football Federation would like to publicly and sincerely apologize to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR), the Federal Government in general, and millions of Nigerians, particularly for not making it to the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals.” The players, the technical staff, and the NFF are aware of how serious this situation is. We are aware of the legitimate aspirations that Nigerians have. “We recognize the fervor and commitment of a nation that has consistently supported its team through successes and setbacks. And we acknowledge that the result this country deserved was not achieved via our combined efforts.As a result, the NFF pledged to make apologies as soon as possible, starting in December with the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). “As we look ahead, the Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025, which starts soon, takes center stage. This competition offers a chance for recovery, rejuvenation, and showcasing the tenacity that has always characterized Nigerian football. We sincerely promise the Nigerian people that we will restore their trust. We’ll bring pride back. On the international scene, we will regain our position. The NFF declared, “We will not let this disappointment be the last word on Nigerian football.”
