Communities and perhaps an entire country were annihilated for a single sin or crime during the years that Allah’s prophets received revelations. For example, Allah (SWT) killed the people of Prophet Luut (AS) with a shower of brimstone because they indulged in sodomy. Floods decimated those who rejected the teachings of Prophet Nuh (AS). A terrible earthquake claimed the lives of the Thamud people who slaughtered the prophet Salih’s (AS) she-camel, which was meant to represent them. For disobeying the holy decree that forbade fishing on the Sabbath, the people of ‘Ayilah were reduced to apes. Because of their conceit, Pharaoh and his supporters perished in the Red Sea. All of these things are summed up by Allah (SWT) in Qur’an 29:40.Nowadays, sins are practically considered normal. The boundaries established by Allah (SWT) are broken without consequence. The world of today, which is predominantly marked by injustice, seems to have taken pride in transgression or sinning. These days, persons who commit the “grave” sins listed in Islamic literature are not troubled by their faith. The few “seemingly righteous” Christians are also unaffected by such acts of disobedience. This is most likely due to the degradation of moral and religious principles to the “lowest of the low.” Lying, betraying trust, hypocrisy, forgery, cheating, fornication, and prostitution are no longer viewed with the contempt that greeted these heinous sins in the past. This may help to explain why crimes like rape, extortion, and the theft of public funds—which a former Nigerian president referred to as “ordinary stealing”—are now considered ordinary offenses.
