The Lagos State Police Command has strengthened security presence at schools, places of worship, markets, recreational areas, and major event venues as part of a new strategy to prevent threats and ensure the safety of residents.
This increased security follows recent incidents in other parts of the country, such as the attack on a Catholic church in Eruku, Kwara State, and the kidnapping of students in Kebbi and Niger states by armed groups.
During a Sunday evening press briefing at the Command Headquarters in Ikeja, Commissioner of Police Olorundare Jimoh announced that proactive deployments have been made to key locations across Lagos to ensure smooth festive activities.
He stated, “We have established a dedicated squad for school protection, and our operations are proceeding well without any reason for concern. Intelligence operatives are actively watching crucial areas to prevent criminal elements from entering the state.”
He revealed that security has been heightened around essential public infrastructure and border communities.
According to him, the state’s waterways are now better safeguarded following the recent deployment of 26 gunboats commissioned in Lagos by the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
Jimoh disclosed that a Submarine Tactical Squad was formed to enhance maritime policing, while the EkoStrike Force, introduced by the IGP to support the Rapid Response Squad, has increased land patrols and improved emergency response capabilities.
He noted that the EkoStrike Force has significantly boosted the Command’s ability to react to security breaches, adding that Somolu Local Government has finalized a permanent operational base for the unit.
The police chief also mentioned that the tactical squad has expanded from 23 teams to 35, with plans to reach 57 teams, ensuring that every local government and local council development area in Lagos will have a dedicated rapid-response unit.
