A suspected confrontation between opposing cult groups in the Ilese area of Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, has resulted in the deaths of two men, one of whom was a police officer.
Community sources indicate that the violence erupted late on Saturday when armed individuals invaded the neighborhood and began firing weapons indiscriminately.
A source, who wished to remain anonymous due to the sensitive nature of the event, suggested the attack is believed to have been a struggle between members of the Aiye and Eiye confraternities.
The source relayed: “A tragic event occurred around 10 p.m. in Ilese. Two people were fatally shot in what is thought to be a clash involving the Aiye and Eiye cult groups.
“One of the deceased was a police officer named Olamilekan, who was assigned to the Obalende Division in Ijebu-Ode.
“The identity of the second victim has not yet been confirmed. The armed men arrived, shooting repeatedly, which caused widespread panic throughout the entire community.”
The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, confirmed the incident, stating that the command had been informed but was still compiling all the necessary details.
He said: “I can confirm that a police officer was one of the casualties. I am currently awaiting a comprehensive report on the circumstances of what occurred.”
