Invest in local drug production to combat HIV/AIDS, pharmacists urge. Nigerian government

The Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria (ACPN) has formally advised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to invest heavily in the local production of drugs, diagnostic kits, and consumables to combat HIV/AIDS.
This recommendation, made by ACPN National Chairman Pharmacist Ambrose Ezeh in a statement marking World HIV/AIDS Day, is crucial for reducing Nigeria’s reliance on funding from external donors for prevention and treatment. Ezeh highlighted that the country recorded approximately 1,400 new HIV infections in 2023. He stressed that the recent reduction in funding from the United States Government should prompt the Nigerian Federal Government to take decisive action and increase its local financial commitment to guarantee the sustainability and uninterrupted delivery of HIV services.
