After losing a leg as a result of diabetes, a Cross River teacher asks for assistance.

Mrs. Virtue Umera Bassey, a senior teacher in Cross River State, recently underwent a right-leg amputation due to chronic diabetes. A long-term educator at Government Secondary School, Adiabo, Tinapa, she had the surgery at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital in August 2025 after extensive medical treatments failed to save the limb. Despite ongoing health challenges and a lack of government assistance, Mrs. Bassey intends to resume her teaching position in January 2026 to continue supporting her two university-aged children. To aid her mobility, medical professionals have recommended a prosthetic limb valued at 2.6 million Naira. Former Commissioner Castro Ezama, who recently visited her, praised her professional excellence and called for public support to help her acquire the prosthesis before she reaches retirement in six years.
