Treason: Alleged coup plotters’ arraignment is postponed due to a language barrier

The arraignment of six individuals charged with conspiring to overthrow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration by force has been postponed by the Federal Government of Nigeria.

Sheik Abdukadir Sani Zaria, one of the six defendants, was unable to understand English, therefore Justice Joyce Abdulmalik postponed the arraignment.

Sunusi Musa, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), declared that his client only speaks and understands Hausa and Arabic when the matter was called on Wednesday.

The prosecution is being led by Lateef Olasunkanmi Fagbemi, SAN, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation.

In the interest of justice, Justice Joyce Abdulmalik mandated that the defendant be given an interpreter during the ensuing hearings.

The arraignment was then postponed by the judge.
