The renowned Okpekpe International 10km Road Race will now take place on May 30, 2026, instead of May 23, as announced by the organizers.
The change was made to guarantee an even more successful excursion this year, according to Pamodzi Sports Marketing, the organizers of the famous World Athletics Gold Label competition.
The revised date enables the fulfillment of stronger logistical plans, such as more medical care, better security deployment, and more amenities for spectators.
According to Race Director Zack Amodu, the modification is a proactive measure to ensure the safety and comfort of both runners and spectators.
Our goal is to provide a top-notch race experience. Amodu added, “We can finalize the upgraded support systems we’ve been working on, ensuring participants enjoy the best possible conditions by moving the event forward by one week.” In accordance with the new World Athletics directive, the race’s medical director recently earned his World Athletics certification in Madrid.
This accomplishment raises the bar for the competition by making the Okpekpe event the first in Nigeria to have a medical director certified by World Athletics.
Recognized as a Gold Label event by World Athletics, the Okpekpe Road Race has developed into one of Africa’s most renowned road races, drawing top runners from all over the world.
It was the first road race in Nigeria and West Africa to receive a Label status and the first to have a World Athletics-certified measurer measure its course.
The organizers emphasized that the postponement is a constructive move to improve the race’s quality and status rather than a result of any setback.
