According to PUNCH Sports Extra, former WBA super-middleweight champion George Groves has urged the organizers of the heavyweight fight between Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury to hold it at Wembley Stadium, stating that the two British fighters would look back with pride if they chose the national stadium over an international venue.
Groves, whose 2014 rematch with Carl Froch helped usher in the era of British super-fights at Wembley, claimed the venue was the ideal setting for a showdown of this size between two fighters who had both previously headlined the stadium in world title bouts.
Groves told Sky Sports, “I hope it takes place on British soil so British fight fans can easily get there and see the two best heavyweights from Britain from our era get it on.”
Seeing it at Wembley would be amazing. On that scale, it is the birthplace of British boxing. It is Britain’s home of sport. If it were overseas, I would be dissatisfied.”It’s lovely to box in Saudi Arabia, it’s lovely to box in Vegas, New York, Dublin, or wherever else they’re talking about,” he said, acknowledging that both fighters had already competed at Wembley and might not place the same value on a return. However, two British people will look back and say, “I’m so happy I boxed at Wembley Stadium.” Who knows, though? He remarked, “Maybe it’s not at the top of their bucket list because they’ve both done it before.”
Frank Warren, Fury’s promoter, has stated that the bout has been scheduled for October and that Wembley is presently the preferred location.
Joshua must defeat Kristian Prenga of Albania in his warm-up fight on July 25 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, for the battle to be televised on Netflix. Before the fight, Fury might also take a tune-up.
Despite the delays, Groves was optimistic that the fight would eventually take place.
“People have put a lot of effort into this battle. They will wait a little while longer because they have already waited this long. Will there ever be the ideal moment for them to clash? The ideal time would have been a long time ago, therefore I don’t think so. However, we are eager to watch these two men box, so we do want to see them fight,” he remarked.
