According to Afrobeats musician Joeboy, ego is influencing how Nigerian musicians work together.
Joeboy asserted that some artists approach collaboration with a competitive mindset, trying to outshine their collaborators, in a recent interview with Cool FM Lagos alongside his colleague, Wizkid Chan.
In order to avoid any potential conflicts of interest, Joeboy stated that he prefers to work with artists with whom he has friendly relationships.
“I find it easier to work with artists that I like or am friends with. because there won’t be any internal rivalry or ego. For my part, I anticipate that you will surpass me in the song if I feature you. I highlighted you for that reason. “I don’t understand the competition,” he remarked.
Wizard Chan stated, “My problem with collaboration is justego.” I would never stop you from recording; you just do the same. Some artists will want to tell you how to do your work and ask for a feature. That is incorrect. Permit me to do what I do.
“I would feature anyone because I am unable to do what they are doing.” Furthermore, I am unable to instruct them to adopt my style or sound like me. Adding a new element to the song is the goal of collaboration. It’s not a competition either. However, some musicians would even go so far as to alter their verses if they thought their collaborator’s sounded better than their own. It’s not meant to be a contest,” he continued.
