Banks in Nigeria Increase SMS Alert Fees

On Thursday, May 1, 2025, Nigerian commercial banks increased the transaction alert cost from ₦4 to ₦6.
According to Naija News, a message delivered early on Wednesday morning informed users of this information.

The banks ascribed this increase to a recent hike in telecom tariffs that the telecom service providers had announced.

It is important to note that the federal government has given the telecom companies permission to raise their rates generally.

Additionally, the commercial bank pointed out that there are additional fees associated with sending SMS notifications to international phone lines.

“Dear Esteemed Client, Please be aware that the SMS transaction alert price will go up from ₦4 to ₦6 per message starting of Thursday, May 1, 2025. According to the telecommunications service providers, this change is the result of a recent hike in telecom charges.

Please take note that transaction alerts are crucial because they enable you to monitor and manage account activity.Guaranty Trust Bank issued a message to the Naija News correspondent that states, “If you would rather not receive transaction alerts via SMS, you can update your preferences by completing the transaction alert form on our website and sending it to gtbankmailsupport@gtbank.com.”
