As South Africa prepares for a crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup Group A encounter against the Czech Republic, former Super Eagles goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi has suggested that head coach Hugo Broos return to the team’s traditional style of play.
After Bafana Bafana’s opening tournament encounter ended in a 2-0 loss to Mexico, Akpeyi offered this advise in his SuperSport post-match analysis.
Although the retired Nigerian international acknowledged that Broos assembled a young team, he underlined the need for the club to capitalize on its advantages in order to revitalize its campaign.
You would agree, first of all, that the coach has attempted to assemble a young team,” Akpeyi said.
“He didn’t want to lose and give up that much because of the coach’s tactical approach.
“Unfortunately, though, it turns out that the team must concede with a lot of red cards.”
However, Akpeyi urged the Bafana Bafana coach to consider a tactical change by adopting a style that better captures the team’s identity, strengths, and footballing culture.
“Because, like this, you don’t want to ruin the record that you made earlier in 2010 against Mexico and you just want to leave the tournament like this,” he stated.
“Therefore, you should make every effort to at least obtain a result with Czech in order to boost your confidence and determine whether you can maintain the group.”
Currently at the bottom of Group A, Bafana Bafana needs to defeat South Korea and the Czech Republic in order to advance.
