The Abia State government has been urged by the Magistrates Association of Nigeria’s Abia State branch to provide official vehicles and safe parking spaces within the State’s court buildings.
The appeal comes after Chief Magistrate Ngozi Lakwa’s private vehicle, which she had parked next to the Umuahia High Court building to perform her official duties, was stolen last week.
Orji Nnaemeka, the chairman of the Magistrates Association of Nigeria’s Abia State branch, made a plea on behalf of the organization, expressing concern that one of its members had misplaced her car while performing her professional duties.
According to the group, the theft made it very evident that magistrates who were in public while carrying out their official duties were becoming more susceptible to criminal activity.
Nnaemeka stated, “It is unfair and demoralizing for judicial workers to suffer personal loss while fulfilling their constitutional duties to the State and its citizens.”
If their desire was not fulfilled, the group feared that more of its members might become victims.
The group contended that if the Abia State government had established sufficient and closely watched parking spots, the car theft and other problems may have been prevented.
