The Iju/Itaogbolu village in Ondo State’s Akure North Local Government area has been devastated by a strong downpour, which has destroyed portions of the General Hospital and damaged a number of local homes and businesses.
Residents and medical personnel are allegedly estimating their losses after the storm hit the area on Sunday night.
As the storm stormed through the town, many residents were forced to seek refuge due to damage caused by the torrential downpour and strong gusts, according to witnesses.
Patients and staff were in a panic because parts of the hospital building were damaged and exposed to the weather.
The results showed that the storm totally wrecked the hospital’s solar panels and solar-powered lighting system.
Healthcare services at the hospital were disrupted by the impact on medical equipment and wards.
Hospital sources revealed that the hospital’s primary source of electricity, the solar power system, had been damaged, making it impossible to conduct diagnostic investigations that require electricity.
No one was killed in the incident, despite the extent of the damage.
To lessen the impact of their losses, several impacted citizens have pleaded with the federal and state governments to provide assistance.
Mrs. Taiwo Oluyemi, one of the casualties, called the event a significant disaster for the neighbourhood.
“This is a serious disaster for us,” she declared. The hospital relies heavily on solar electricity, thus its devastation will undoubtedly have an impact on community healthcare services. We are pleading with the government and other good people to help us.
Additionally, locals demanded immediate action to repair damaged infrastructure and supply relief supplies to those impacted by the downpour.
